Constructivism

Constructivist learning suggests that an individual builds knowledge based on their experiences. When we talk about constructivist learning in terms of pedagogy, we are talking about an approach of gaining knowledge by doing.

The constructive approach supports a hands-on approach where the individual learns through doing. Students discover, problem solve and draw conclusions.

The constructivist approach to learning also supports the practice of collaboration. Individual students have different sets of skills that they bring to a problem solution. When students collaborate on solutions to problems their individual knowledge is shared and new knowledge is gained by others through the collaboration.

Brain Hurricane incorporates constructivist learning techniques into the curriculum. A hands-on learning approach is used throughout the Brain Hurricane sessions. Students work with materials that help them understand the concepts and build their academic skills.

Brain Hurricane reinforces the constructivist collaboration approach to learning by having students work together in teams to solve hands-on problems. Through this experience of learning by doing in a collaborative environment students gain knowledge , skill, and an appreciation of others.

Wowzers incorporates the constructivist learning techniques in a virtual setting. Computer based manipulatives take the place of physical hands on materials and allow the learner to move, create, organize, arrange and build objects that reinforce the skills being taught.
